UPDATE AND OUR AMAZING FRIEND CHUCK

Hi, everyone! We were all touched by the tiny 2 lb Pixie Belle and her remarkable spirit despite a badly deformed leg and rough start to life

She recently went to 5th Avenue Vet Specialists to be evaluated for surgery to make it easier for her to get around without hauling a bent and useless leg. Unfortunately, preliminary bloodwork and tests revealed another even more serious health issue threatening this sweet girl.

It seems Pixie has a problem with her body's filtration system. An abnormal blood vessel is causing everything to bypass her liver and dumping toxins into her body.

There is a surgery that can repair the problem, and little Pixie can live a full and healthy life. The surgery will cost thousands of dollars, but we have decided we cannot give up on this little girl.

The amazingly generous Chuck Palahniuk has donated some amazing items (Fight Club genuine jacket, first edition book, and personal note!) to our May 7 benefit, with proceeds to help this little lady. See

Darbi here, Pixie's foster mom. I have had her here for about ten days and she is doing just great. She is about the sweetest little girl I have ever met and she's so tiny, I take her everywhere. She fits right in my purse! Not a dog bag...my purse. She gets so excited when I pull out the purse because she knows we're going on an adventure. She can't quite jump in there herself because of her bum leg but she tries.

Pixie has been to comedy shows, fancy restaurants, loud bars, television shoots and even for trips in the basket of my bike and nothing seems to phase her. I am amazed at her confidence level, given her teeny size and history. She runs right up to anyone who comes over and makes friends immediately. I brought her to a recording session last night and she was curled up sleeping on the chest of my friend Lizz within minutes of meeting her. She loves everyone she meets. She was a little nervous about other dogs at first but even that seems to be dissipating as she feels more secure. We were in the home of two goodly-sized dogs last night and while she wasn't thrilled to be inspected by them, she did tolerate it.

Little Pixie Belle had no idea of what housebreaking meant when she came here ten days ago but she's learning very quickly. As long as I am sure to put her in the bathroom with a weewee pad and a closed door (she's a lady and will not go in front of me) every few hours, we have no accidents. Her new home will want to keep a close eye on her and keep her on a schedule until this is solved but I think she'll be fine before too long, especially once we are able to remove her chicken leg so she can stay clean.

She's perfectly happy to sleep in a crate when my boyfriend is here but she loves to sleep in bed, too. Typical chi, she will burrow under the covers and sleep for hours and hours and hours.

I am growing very attached to Miss Pixie, of course, but I hope we find her a forever home soon (and her friends!). I don't know what my life holds in the upcoming months and years, so I can't commit to a dog. I know there's a very special loving home waiting for this special loving girl.

My name is Pixie.

As for me, I'm a sweet and loving female, only a year old. I was born with a badly deformed hind leg, and then discarded at the pound. None of this hardship has gotten my spirits down - I'm a true little survivor!

My bad hind leg really cramps my style. I can't use it to walk, and it just trips my other feet. Plus I pee on it all the time, and I like to feel clean! In order to make me more comfortable, I'm going to go through a surgery that will remove the useless appendage.
